Why I’m Forever Canadian
Danielle Smith can push her separatist fantasies all she wants, but let me be clear: I’m forever Canadian.
Yes, we all know her proposed Alberta referendum on separation or constitutional renegotiation won’t succeed. It’s legally flimsy, politically divisive, and economically dangerous. But even symbolic gestures carry weight, and this one is heavy with disrespect for who we are, what we’ve built, and where we’re headed — together.
Because this isn’t just about a policy disagreement. This is about identity. It’s about belonging. It’s about choosing unity in a world already so fractured.
I’m Canadian Because I Believe in Each Other
Canada isn’t perfect. No country is. But it is built on the idea that we’re stronger together. From coast to coast to coast, this country is stitched together by shared values: cooperation, mutual respect, and compassion.
Being Canadian means that when a town floods in Nova Scotia or burns in Alberta, people from across the country send help, not hate. Being Canadian means that our health care, though under strain, is rooted in the belief that no one should go bankrupt to survive. It means that even with different languages, cultures, and politics — we choose community over chaos.
Danielle Smith wants to tear at that fabric because she thinks the thread is fraying. But maybe it’s only fraying because she keeps pulling on it.
I’m Canadian Because My Story Lives Here
My memories, my milestones, my politics, my heartbreak, my healing — they’ve all unfolded on this soil. I’ve worked in community kitchens, organized in local campaigns, marched for justice, and cried at vigils. I’ve sung “O Canada” with pride and protested its broken promises with purpose.
But I’ve never once doubted that this land — this country — is home. Not just to me, but to millions of others who believe in something bigger than borders.
You don’t abandon your home when things get hard. You fight to make it better. That’s what real leadership looks like — not stomping your feet and threatening to leave when you don’t get your way.
I’m Canadian Because Hope Lives Here
Danielle Smith’s separatist talk isn’t about freedom. It’s about fear. Fear of accountability. Fear of progress. Fear of the beautiful diversity that makes this country more just and more kind every single day.
But here’s what she doesn’t understand: Canada is more than a contract. It’s a covenant. It’s a promise that even when we disagree — and we will — we still belong to each other.
So while some dream of tearing us apart, I choose to dream of a Canada that includes all of us — the farmers, the students, the elders, the immigrants, the workers, the queer kids in rural towns, the Indigenous leaders reclaiming space, the nurses and teachers who keep showing up, the everyday heroes who believe in something bigger than oil and outrage.
I’m Forever Canadian
Not because of who’s in charge.
Not because of shiny policies.
But because my heart is stitched into this place — its people, its stories, its stubborn, soft resilience.
Danielle Smith can try to divide us. She can stomp and threaten and tweet.
But me? I’ll keep waving the maple leaf — not as blind loyalty, but as bold commitment. To a better future. To reconciliation. To justice. To care.
To Canada.
Forever. 🇨🇦
